Posted September 25, 2018 06:00:58After more than a year of anticipation, a federal grand jury has indicted a local band for allegedly violating the Fair Labor Standards Act.
A grand jury in Iowa arrested the Iowans Band of the Ojibwe on charges of “possession of drugs,” “possessing marijuana” and “peddling marijuana.”
Iowa’s Department of Labor and Industries announced the arrests on Tuesday, September 24, but did not provide further details about the alleged offenses.
Iowa Labor Department spokesman Jason Williams said in a statement that the band is charged with “the theft of more than $2,000 in drug-related merchandise, which is in violation of the FLSA.
It also faces the felony of “intentionally obtaining and possessing more than one ounce of marijuana,” and it faces a misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled substance.
The band is scheduled to be arraigned on September 24 in federal court.
IowansBand of the Mohawk will appear in court on Thursday, September 25.
The band has not yet released a statement.
